What Makes Starved Rock Family Campground Different

Starved Rock Family Campground is the kind of place families come to slow down, be together, and actually enjoy camping—without feeling like every hour needs a plan. We’re family-owned and family-run, and we’ve rebuilt this park with families in mind: room to settle in, space for kids to play, and the little comforts that make everyone happier between adventures.

We’re in Utica, IL, less than 7 miles from Starved Rock State Park. So you can go do the big “out there” stuff during the day, then come back to a campground that feels like the relaxing part of the trip too.

1) Kids can be kids here

One of the best parts of family camping is watching your kids light up the second they realize, “Wait—we get to play outside all day?” At our park, there are natural places for that to happen. The playground is an easy favorite, the pool (seasonal) becomes the afternoon reward, and the walking paths give you a simple way to take a lap after dinner when everyone still has a little energy.

A lot of families tell us they love that the fun doesn’t stop when they get back from exploring. Camp itself keeps the day going—in a good way.

2) It’s friendly in the way a family campground should be

We hear it often: guests appreciate the welcoming vibe here. People wave. Kids make quick friends. And if you have a question, we’re nearby and happy to help.

That “good neighbor” feeling is one of the reasons families come back. As one guest said: “Accommodating and friendly folks. We will be back soon!”

3) Your family can stay the way that fits you

Every family camps differently. Some want the RV setup where everything’s right there. Some love tent camping and the “sleep under the trees” feeling. Some want to arrive with less gear and more comfort.

That’s why our Ways to Stay include:

  • RV sites
  • Tent sites
  • Glamping
  • Henry’s Cabin

Choose what fits your crew, your season, and your comfort level—and make camp feel like your kind of trip.

4) The “between moments” are where the memories happen

Families don’t usually remember the moment they checked something off a list. They remember the in-between: ice cream after dinner, one more playground stop, a volleyball game that started as “just for a minute,” or the way everyone finally slowed down around the campfire.

That’s why we love having simple onsite fun—things to do that don’t require a drive or a reservation. Depending on the season, you may also catch special Activities & Events like food trucks or themed fun when they’re scheduled.

5) It’s set up for real-life family camping

Camping is more fun when the practical stuff is handled. We have laundry onsite, seasonal bathrooms and a shower house (closed during winter months), a camp store/check-in office for snacks and supplies (seasonal hours), and an internet café where Wi-Fi is available when you need it.

Guests also mention how clean and well-kept the campground feels—something we take seriously. One guest put it simply: “Wonderful campground. Spacious sites. Very clean and well kept.”

6) You’re close to the area, but you don’t have to live in the car

One of the best parts of staying here is that you can mix big outdoor days with simple camp days. If you want help building your plan, our Area Guide and Things to Do pages are where we share local favorites and easy trip ideas—so you can spend less time researching and more time enjoying.

The difference, in one sentence

We’re different because families don’t just sleep here—they enjoy being here.

If you’re ready to choose your dates, we’d love to host you.
