The park’s historic lodge and its limited number of campsites can’t accommodate the demand, especially during peak season (Memorial Day through Labor Day), fall foliage weekends in October, and bald eagle watching weekends in January and February. If you’re not booking 6–12 months ahead, you’ll likely find the park’s sites taken.

• Shabbona Lake State Recreation Area — About 40 minutes northeast, a larger campground with more availability but farther from the park.

Tips for Booking a Campsite Near Starved Rock

A few things worth knowing before your trip:

• Book early, especially for weekends. Fall foliage weekends (last two weeks of September, all of October) are the hardest to get. Summer holiday weekends run a close second.
• Consider weeknights. If your schedule is flexible, midweek sites are almost always available — and campgrounds near Starved Rock are noticeably quieter on Tuesday–Thursday nights.
• Private campgrounds have more availability than state parks. State park sites are typically booked months out. Private campgrounds like ours often have last-minute openings.
