Best Campgrounds Near Starved Rock State Park When the Park Is Full

It happens to almost everyone who tries to book a last-minute trip to Starved Rock State Park in Illinois: you search for a campsite inside the park and find nothing available. Starved Rock is one of Illinois’ most popular state parks, and its on-site campsites — especially the cabins — book months in advance, particularly for summer weekends and fall foliage season. If you’re staring at a fully booked calendar, don’t give up. There are excellent campgrounds just minutes from the park’s entrance.

Why Starved Rock State Park Campgrounds Fill Up So Fast

Starved Rock State Park draws over 2 million visitors per year — making it one of the most visited state parks in the entire Midwest. The park’s historic lodge and its limited number of campsites can’t accommodate the demand, especially during peak season (Memorial Day through Labor Day), fall foliage weekends in October, and bald eagle watching weekends in January and February. If you’re not booking 6–12 months ahead, you’ll likely find the park’s sites taken.

Starved Rock Family Campground — 7 Miles from the Park

Starved Rock Family Campground in Utica, IL is the closest private campground to Starved Rock State Park and one of the best alternatives when the park is booked. Located just 7 miles from the park’s main entrance, we have 126 sites across four accommodation types — and we typically have availability when the state park doesn’t.

What you get here that you don’t get inside the park:

  • Full hookup RV sites with 50/30 amp, water, and sewer
  • On-site swimming pool
  • Playground and dog park
  • High-speed campground WiFi
  • Glamping tents — a furnished tent option you won’t find inside the park
  • Camping cabin sleeping up to 5 guests
  • Laundry facilities on site

Starved Rock State Park is a 15-minute drive from our gate — easy enough to day-trip to the canyons, waterfalls, and hiking trails, then come back to a full-hookup site and a hot shower at night.

Other Campground Options Near Starved Rock State Park

A few other campgrounds operate in the Starved Rock region worth knowing about:

  • Illinois Waterway Visitor Center Campground — Operated by the Army Corps of Engineers, located along the Illinois River. Limited hookups.
  • Buffalo Rock State Park — A small state park about 7 miles east of Starved Rock with basic tent and RV sites. Very limited — book early.
  • Shabbona Lake State Recreation Area — About 40 minutes northeast, a larger campground with more availability but farther from the park.

Tips for Booking a Campsite Near Starved Rock

A few things worth knowing before your trip:

  • Book early, especially for weekends. Fall foliage weekends (last two weeks of September, all of October) are the hardest to get. Summer holiday weekends run a close second.
  • Consider weeknights. If your schedule is flexible, midweek sites are almost always available — and campgrounds near Starved Rock are noticeably quieter on Tuesday–Thursday nights.
  • Private campgrounds have more availability than state parks. State park sites are typically booked months out. Private campgrounds like ours often have last-minute openings.
